The following events occurred in 1989.

Paper money

Denomination	Notes
	Until January 1989, every $1 bill in circulation remained a Series 1985, as the Series 1988 bills were just released by that time.
	As of January 1, 1989, all $2 bills in circulation remained up to Series 1976.
	Until April 1989, every $5 bill in circulation remained a Series 1985, as the Series 1988 bills were just released by that time.
	Series 1985 $10 bills remained current in 1989, as this denomination never got a Series 1988.
	Series 1985 $20 bills remained current in 1989, as this denomination never got a Series 1988.
	Until the release of Series 1988 bills in August 1989, all $50 bills were Series 1985 or older.
	Until the release of Series 1988 bills in August 1989, all $100 bills were Series 1985 or older. All Series 1981A bills were also still guaranteed in circulation, as so were some Series 1981 bills.

Carryovers

Logos

In theaters, the Big Six major film studios (except Paramount) continued using their 1987 logos on 1989 releases of their respective films...

...as so did their home video divisions...

...and their television counterparts.

Terrestrial broadcast networks NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX continued using their 1987 logos.

All premium cable networks also retained their 1986 logos.

Paramount became a Paramount Communications company, following the disestablishment of Gulf+Western.

All Dr. Seuss videos were repackaged with new cover artwork.

January

Shining Time Station premiered on PBS this month to introduce Thomas & Friends to North American audiences.

March

Windows 2.1 was updated to Windows 2.11. MS-DOS remained virtually unchanged.

Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi premiered on NBC on March 19.

April

There were now three Barney & the Backyard Gang videos.

June

On June 16, Ghostbusters II was released in theaters from Columbia Pictures.

August

Two new consoles -- Nintendo's first handheld, the Game Boy, and Sega's Genesis -- were released on August 14.

In its history, Nintendo's released their first handheld video game this month -- Super Mario Land.

The Wizard of Oz was re-released on home video for its 50th anniversary.

September

Following the discontinuation of My Little Pony 'n Friends, shows based on video games premiered on first-run syndication, starting with the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Some episodes were later released on home video:

The next seasons of these programs premiered this month on their respective networks.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks was re-packaged with new cover artwork, and Bambi was released on video for the first time. The Walt Disney Classics logo also changed:

PBS's logo was updated on newer programs.

Fun with Music joined the Disney's Sing-Along Songs series.

November

Ghostbusters II was released on home video from RCA/Columbia Pictures Home Video.
