Barney the Dinosaur uses his magic and whisks the Backyard Gang and their new friend, Derek, to the North Pole. There they meet a magical snowman, frolic on the ice, pretend to be elves in Santa's workshop, and best of all, learn the true meaning of friendship.
It's Christmas Eve and Santa's given Barney and his friends a special job -- to take Derek (the new boy in their neighborhood) to the North Pole to see if Santa knows his address. After arriving in Barney's special sleigh, the kids frolic on the ice, pretend to be elves in Santa's workshop and learn from Mrs. Claus that "doing things for others is what Christmas is all about."

The 1993 VHS of Waiting for Santa was the only Barney & The Backyard Gang video to have closed captions from The National Captioning Institute. This re-release contains NO logos whatsoever; just the old warning screens (1993-1996) for Barney videos. Later prints from 1994 onwards were re-captioned by The Caption Center at WGBH. The tape continued to be re-released until 1998.
In the Spanish language version, the opening contains no vocals, just a man reading the names of the kids in a Latin American accent.
