Greg Heffley and his family attend a pool party to start off the new season of summer, but Greg himself plays a video game on his PSP, because he is quite addicted to video games. His father, Frank Heffley, wants him to do more outdoor stuff. On the last day of school, Greg attempts to have Holly put her phone number in addition to signing his yearbook, but before she could write down the last two numbers, the bell rings, and all the students shove for the exit. Greg's mother, Susan Heffley, starts a book club called "Reading is Fun", and Greg's best friend, Rowley Jefferson, takes him to a country club. There, they meet Holly and Patty, and they all play tennis together. One day during summer vacation, a dog is introduced to the Heffley family, who is later known to be named as "Sweetie". Later, Greg is invited for a trip to a beach house near the Boardwalk. The cell phone Greg gets before he goes there only allows him to call home and 911. In an amusement park, Greg and Rowley are told not to go on scary rides, including the Cranium Shaker. After several problems in the beach house, Greg's father arrives and sends him back home early. Then one day, Greg sneaks in back to the country club, and pretends to be a member of Rowley's family. Eventually, he gets busted after Rowley's father finds out that Greg has bought nothing but smoothies, and he really doesn't have a job at all in the country club. Frank pays for all the smoothies, and Greg ends up forced to attend the Spag Union Military Academy. He attempts to impress his father by planning to set up a trap for revenge against Troop 42, led by Warren. When the plan becomes successful, Frank tells Warren that he is a phony, then reveals to his son that he never liked camping. Meanwhile, Rodrick, who has fallen in love with Heather Hills (Holly's older sister), performs a rock song at her 16th birthday day, but in the process, Heather becomes humiliated, and the party gets ruined. But Holly is happy about this, and she holds Greg's had, meaning that she likes him.
