SynopsisEdit

It is 11-year-old Greg Heffley's first day of middle school. But when he enters the building for the first time, he appears to be shorter than 95% of all the students in the school. Chirag Gupta, one of the few boys who is smaller than Greg, tells the story about the Cheese Touch, which comes from just one simple thing -- touching a rotten slice of cheese on the basketball court. Despite Greg's plans to be the school's class favorite, they always backfire, and he eventually becomes the least popular student of the school. Throughout his first year in middle school, Greg tries many things, such as scholastic wrestling, joining the Safety Patrol, and even auditioning for the school play of The Wizard of Oz. His friendship with his best friend, Rowley Jefferson, gradually begins to fall apart since the time when something goes wrong during Safety Patrol, when Rowley takes the blame for a mistake Greg makes. But when Greg takes the blame for Rowley's actions of eating the Cheese by order of a group of teenagers, the two reconcile and Greg achieves his dream of being a class favorite with Rowley as the "cutest friends".
