Events in 1981

February 16–20 Five new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood titled "Mister Rogers Talks About Divorce" premiered on PBS. These were episodes #1476–1480. Reruns of the old series continued on February 23.
February 27 The Wizard of Oz reran on CBS.
April 3 Alice in Wonderland 1981 Poster

Alice in Wonderland was re-released in theaters for the last time, while Cinderella and Robin Hood were pushed back to later dates.

June 1–5 Five more new episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, titled "Mister Rogers Talks About Competition", premiered on PBS. These were episodes #1481–1485.
June 26 1981 Dumbo VHS 1981 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh VHS

Dumbo was released on VHS for rental only, while The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh was released for both rental and sale.

July 9 Donkeykong title

Nintendo released Donkey Kong exclusively to arcades, during the second generation of video gaming. This was also Mario's first appearance in a video game.

July 10 The Fox and the Hound 1981 Poster

The Fox and the Hound premiered in theaters.

July 20–24 "Mister Rogers Talks About Play" (episodes #1486–1490) premiered on PBS, followed by reruns of all episodes from #1461 to #1485.

October 15 1981 Alice in Wonderland VHS

Alice in Wonderland was released on VHS for rental only. Like Dumbo, it wasn't available for sale.

November 2–27 Episodes #1031–1035, #1041–1050 and #1061–1065 of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood all aired on PBS for the last time. However, this wasn't officially confirmed until around late 1983 or early 1984.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! reran on CBS this year.

December 18 Cinderella 1981 Poster

Cinderella was re-issued in theaters.

By the end of this year, a total of at least 201 out of 420 remaining episodes of the old series of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood reran on PBS.
