Playhouse Video, a division of CBS/FOX Video, was the main distributor for The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat and all other Dr. Seuss specials on VHS. When originally released in 1985 on VHS, The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat also included Pontoffel Pock. It was later re-printed alone in 1989.
After Playhouse Video became defunct, distribution rights for The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat and two other Dr. Seuss videos were sold to Random House Home Video. They re-released all three videos on April 21, 1992. Later on August 6, 1996, a "sing-along" version was released by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, followed by a re-packaging in 1997.
