The Video CD, or VCD for short, was the very first digital recording format ever released in the home video industry. A typical VCD carries an aspect ratio of 4:3, like the VHS, but with a framerate of 29.97 or 23.976 frames per second on NTSC VCDs and 25 frames per second on PAL VCDs. The resolution is always 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL).
All VCDs can carry up to 800 MB of video and audio, and will require an MPEG-1 codec for playback. Many films released on VCD are split into 2 or 3 parts, depending on the film's length, and do not have any regional lockout, allowing you to view VCDs on any machine, including DVD players.
VCDs were mostly available in Asia, mainly in countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, while in the Americas, Europe, Japan, and South Korea, they all used the VHS format, as the VCD was extremely rare in those countries.
